Converting Japanese addresses from Outlook into English Thunderbird

My Windows address list (used also in Outlook Express) has numberous Japanese names and address that show up garbled when the address book is imported into Thunderbird 2. Will full Unicode compatibility be included in version 3? Does anyone know any workarounds?
